Josh Hutcherson does not have a special acting education, and his grandfather, a professional psychologist, gradually pushed him to choose a profession. He instilled in his grandson an interest in human characters, explained what forms his core, what then grows to this core, why people in the same situation behave differently. And Josh felt that he liked to try on different images, to play with them.
Now the knowledge of psychology helps Hutcherson to calmly perceive popularity, not to give vent to emotions. Fame is a responsibility.
Childhood and youth
Josh Hutcherson was born in the small town of Union, located in the US state of Kentucky. Chris Hutcherson, Josh’s father, was an analyst at an environmental organization. Mother Michelle Fightmaster at the time of her son’s birth worked for Delta Air Lines. She would later become Josh’s personal assistant. The family also has a younger son, Connor.
As a child, Hutcherson only talked about film actors and dreamed of being one of them. Parents considered this a whim, believing that over time he would outgrow such a hobby. Nevertheless, neither Michelle nor Chris interfered with their son’s aspirations, allowing him to participate in auditions.
At the age of 8, Josh found the address of an acting agency and became a client on his own, thanks to which he gained experience in filming an advertisement for the American supermarket Kroger and the educational film “Bible School Holidays”.
Hutcherson attended New Heaven Primary School in Union until the age of 9 and was then homeschooled. In his senior year, he attended Ryle High School for one semester, but spent little time reading textbooks. For most of his childhood, the boy either worked on the set or went in for sports – football, tennis, triathlon. The actor retained his love for physical exercises and sports games in the future.
In 2002, Josh met acting teacher Bob Luke, who advised him to try his hand at auditions in Los Angeles instead of local auditions. The 10-year-old actor moves to Hollywood with his mother and gets his first feature film role.
In 2002, Josh Hutcherson appeared in several television series in less prominent roles. He played Nicky Harper in “Homemade Blend”, a young Glen in “Becoming Glen”, and the boy Matt in the “First Snow” episode of the popular medical series ER.
The following year, he continued to appear in the television films The Women’s Brigade, Wonder Dogs, Line of Fire, and Wild Days. For the last film, he was nominated for the Young Artist Award, which is considered an Oscar analogue for young show business stars.
Also in 2003, Josh made his debut on the big screen in an episode of the biographical comedy American Splendor, dedicated to the writer and literary critic, author of the comic book series of the same name Harvey Picard. Starring Paul Giamatti.
Further, Hutcherson’s filmography is replenished with the series “Father Eddie”, the drama “The Last Ride”, the teenage sports film “Kings of the Motorcycle Track”, the comedy “Hit and Shout”, the family film “Madhouse on Wheels” and the fantastic picture “Zatura: Space Adventure”.
The actor tried his hand at voice acting several times. Josh’s voice is spoken by Bruce Wayne, familiar to viewers as Batman in childhood, in the TV series “Justice League”, Tod Bartley in the animated film “Funny Van”, Markle in the English version of the anime “Howl’s Moving Castle”, the main character of the cartoon “Polar Express” and Nod in fantasy Epic.
The first popularity came to the young actor in 2005, when a romantic melodrama about the first childhood love “Little Manhattan” was released, in which Josh played the main role. The film “Bridge to Terabithia” about school friends living in a fictional world, where actress Annasophia Robb became his partner, consolidated the success. Hutcherson receives two awards at once at the next Young Artist ceremony for his performance as Jess Aarons.
Josh also has key characters in the family comedy Fire Dog, the crime drama Lifelong Flight, the adaptation of Jules Verne’s novel Journey to the Center of the Earth, and the fantasy action movie The Story of a Vampire.
In 2010, Hutcherson, along with Mia Wasikowski, Julianne Moore and Mark Ruffalo, starred in the tragicomedy The Kids Are All Right. The main characters of the film are the children of a lesbian couple who wished to find their biological father. The project was highly acclaimed by critics, confirmed by 2 Golden Globes, a special award of the Berlin Film Festival, given for coverage of the problems of homosexual people, 4 nominations for Oscar and BAFTA.
In the spring of 2012, the first part of the popular dystopia The Hunger Games based on the novel by Suzanne Collins was released. The book was on the New York Times bestseller list for more than 2 years, and its film adaptation was a real breakthrough in Josh’s creative biography.
Hutcherson got the role of Pete Mellark, one of the main ones in the film. The rest of the characters are distributed between Liam Hemsworth, Jennifer Lawrence, Woody Harrel, Donald Sutherland. The success of the picture exceeded all expectations.
Later, sequels to this action appeared – “The Hunger Games: Catching Fire”, “The Hunger Games: Mockingjay. Part 1″ and “The Hunger Games: Mockingjay. Part 2”. For this role, Josh received the MTV Movie Awards, Teen Choice Awards, People’s Choice Awards and CinemaCon Award.
In addition, the earned fee allowed the actor to feel freedom, not to be limited in the necessary expenses. He bought a house for his parents, paid for his brother’s college education. But even if he didn’t get a lot of money, but continued to act a lot, he would still feel happy, the young man noted in an interview.
In parallel with The Hunger Games, Josh was working on another dystopian action movie, The Elusive. The film also stars Chris Hemsworth and Jeffrey Dean Morgan. The public did not appreciate the idea of the Third World War and North Korea’s attack on the United States: the picture failed at the box office.
Even after the completion of the 1st part of the cinematic tetralogy, which made him a star, Hutcherson said that he intended to take up directing, because “interesting plots are kept in my head and there is an understanding of how to explain to the actors what is required of them.” Josh dreams of shooting Joaquin Phoenix, Jake Gyllenhaal or Ralph Fiennes in his movie.
The first such experience was a short called Monkey, part of The Big Script, a five-reel series produced by Hutcherson and his mother’s Turkeyfoot Productions, Indigenous Media and Condé Nast Entertainment.
By the way, as a producer, the actor showed himself even earlier, in the Spanish-French-Belgian thriller with a melodramatic bias “Paradise Lost”, where he played on an equal footing with Benicio Del Toro himself. Josh’s character is a young surfer who is in love with the niece of Colombian drug lord Pablo Escobar.
In 2016, Hutcherson landed the lead role in And Lost the Fight, a drama based on the novel by Nobel Prize winner in literature John Steinbeck. The tape told about the formation of the trade union movement in America in the 30s. The director was so impressed by the actor’s performance that he invited Josh to the next film, The Long Home, which is expected to premiere in 2019.
Drama with elements of comedy “The Disaster Creator” – a film about the film. The plot revolves around director Tommy Wiseau’s creation of The Room, considered both iconic and the worst in film history. Hutcherson was on the set with brothers Dave and James Franco, Zac Efron and Seth Rogen.
The actor refused to participate in the political thriller Betrayal for Beginners for security reasons, as the film was filmed in Jordan and Morocco. Had he made a different choice, he could have played a UN official who uncovers a conspiracy by the government and oil corporation owners in post-war Iraq.
In his personal life, Josh is accompanied entirely by actresses. With colleagues, the young man admits, it is easier to meet – the same rhythm of life, interests and complete mutual understanding. Only there is no wife, no children, because falling in love is too easy, but it’s better than not knowing this magical feeling at all.
The actor met with the singer and TV series star Victoria Justice, but in 2011 the couple broke up. After filming the movie Journey 2: The Mysterious Island, Vanessa Hudgens became his girlfriend. The next darling is Claudia Traisac, partner in the thriller Paradise Lost.
In 2013, Josh Hutcherson left the Golden Globe party with Selena Gomez. Information has repeatedly appeared in the American media that celebrities have an affair, but they have not officially confirmed the data on close relationships.
Despite the fact that the young man adheres to a traditional orientation, he actively opposes homophobia and in support of tolerance towards sexual minorities.
Josh has a small height of 170 cm for a man, which does not prevent him from looking spectacular at photo shoots for glossy publications and on the red carpet. The actor famously manages with Harley-Davidson Forty-Eight, loves leather jackets, and understands women’s shoes and fashion brands so much that he presents expensive gifts to all his girlfriends and mother, “because the right bag or shoes bring so much happiness.”
The body of a man is decorated with tattoos – an anchor, a pirate ship and the sign of the zodiac Libra. There are a lot of photos of pets on Instagram – dogs named Nixon, Diesel and Driver, there are also cats, but Josh himself does not remember how many.
In 2012, Hutcherson bought a mansion called “Treehouse” in the Hollywood Hills from TV presenter Ellen DeGeneres, previously owned by Heath Ledger. Josh considers himself a fan of a famous colleague who died in 2008.
The actor gains strength for filming by listening to music. Preference is given to Jeff Buckley, Bob Marley and Led Zeppelin, but in general I like the whole variety of genres, from rock to dance and from soul to hip-hop.
Josh Hutcherson now
Josh is currently busy producing and filming the sci-fi film Tomorrow Man, where he plays the lead role of a research center janitor.
Who at night turns into a fanatical gamer, easily passing difficult levels and degrees of protection. One day, the heroes of the “video shooter” materialize and turn to the guy with a request to protect the Earth from a hostile alien race.
In the spring of 2019, it became known that the 3rd season would be the last for the series. Streaming service Hulu, releasing the picture, did not report the reasons for this decision. However, insiders learned that action co-author Seth Rogen terminated the contract with Sony, which is the producer of Tomorrow Man. The remaining members of the film crew, apparently, considered the further work to be incorrect.
In the thriller “Heat” (“Burn”), Hutcherson reincarnates as a robber of a gas station. The appearance of a guy at the crime scene plays into the hands of one of the cashiers, who is jealous of a young colleague, and the main character becomes an instrument of revenge for the offended woman.
